An enigmatic figure, the Amber Dragon of old was a leader of the Conclave of the Elements, a master of the element of fire. He fought against the Church in the Scarlet War and was captured, tried, convicted, stilled and released. He then disappeared for centuries.

Tribunal Records[edit]

From the official records of the Tribunal, held by Field Marshal Carline Bright-Eyes at the base of the Jade Tower, in the days after the fall of the College of Mages, in which 51 Master Wizards were tried, and most executed.

...and the Amber Dragon, who had no other name, stood before the Tribunal, called to order on the battlefield outside the Jade Tower. The Tower, which had fallen before the might of the Army of the Sun, yet stood, though diminished in the sight of ORB.

“Amber Dragon! You stand accused of heresy of the highest order. You stand accused of consorting with demons, of blaspheming, of calling upon the spirits and forms of the dead, which goes against our Scriptures and our laws. You stand accused of using black magic, which is a sin. You stand accused of crimes both heinous and dark. You stand so accused. What say you?”

And the Amber Dragon, in his shadow of a voice, said,

“Guilty, Your Ladyship. On all counts.”

At this, a murmur went through the assembled crowd, for the Master Wizards had, to the last, proclaimed their innocence. And each, in turn, had been found guilty, and stilled, and executed.

And the Field Marshal, leader of the Tribunal, called the assembly to order.

“Dragon! For your confession, shall your life be spared. Your power still is a threat and a sin, and shall be stripped of you, but your life I give you as a lesson to those of the arcanists – that the Sun’s Mercy is as powerful as His Wrath.”

And the Amber Dragon was stilled, and set free, to wander the shadows of the world as long as his will would last him. He was last seen walking east, toward the plains and the desert, where wanders no man, but is the dominion of beasts and nomads.

Recent Encounters[edit]

Recently, the Companions of the Rising Sun have encountered a strange person claiming, with some possibility of truth, to be the Amber Dragon, and to have information and items they need. Specifically, he held the Pyre of Heroes, and gave it to Nigel StoneVault, and sent them on a mission to rescue Tollerath, last of the College of Mages' Chronomancers.

He claims to have been stilled, though as a fully-enlightened elementalist, he retains his mystic connection to the plane of fire. He also claims that, in spite of the usual suicide rate of stilled arcanists, he survived, because he had a purpose to cling to - to pass on the Pyre of Heroes and see that it was used in the Ceremony of Union. He also confirmed that the description of the Ceremony that the Companions received is essentially correct.

Variant History[edit]

An alternate account of the Scarlet War, which differs significantly from the established canon, was recently presented to the Companions by the Amber Dragon, in An Alternate History - The Scarlet War.
