Wizard

This character class is available with the following notes:

  • As of 1 Penitence, 1341, the ban on arcane magic in Crescent has been (reluctantly) repealed. The law has been changed, however, to outlaw the practice of "combat magic" by unlicensed practitioners. This includes basically all arcanists and clerics of deities other than ORB. The Jade Imperium, together with the clergy of Nevari, are actively pursuing the possibility of extending the licensing to cover their registered members.

Sources of Training

There are three possible sources of wizardly training

The Jade Tower

Wizards may be trained in the Jade Tower. As of this time, there has been time to train only one new group of apprentices; this means that either the PC is one of those new recruits, or was part of the College of Mages during the Scarlet War, hid in the Holy Temple at Mt. Daneasus, and is consequently over 500 years old (sort of). PCs electing to be one of the new recruits may not start with other class levels.

Either way, the PC is a citizen of the Jade Imperium, entitled to all the protection and rights thereof.

As the Jade Tower has a no-tolerance policy towards traffic with the dead, Jade Tower wizards may not start with necromancy spells in their spellbooks, and may not specialize in the school of necromancy.

Hskk'th Clan

Kobolds may be part of the Hskk'th Clan, taught by V'raag. This training is essentially equivalent to that of the Jade Tower, and would be likely to include heavy study in the creation of magic items.

There are no school restrictions within the Hskk'th Clan.

The wizard is a citizen of the City-State of Haven, entitled to all the protection and rights thereof. However, as Haven has not come forward as an independent nation publicly, this protection will be nominal.

Natural Student

It is possible - though unlikely - that a naturally talented student finding a low-level spellbook might learn to cast spells that way. This training is not equivalent to that of the Jade Tower, and introduces several restrictions.

The self-taught wizard:

  • is not a citizen of the Jade Imperium or Haven
  • may not specialize in a school of magic
  • may not take an item creation feat without proper schooling (from V'raag, the Jade Tower, or similar source)
  • gets the Magical Aptitude feat as a bonus feat at first level, instead of Scribe Scroll
  • gains Use Magic Device as a class skill
  • is proficient with all simple weapons
