Class Notes

Available as listed in the Player's Handbook.

  • Halflings, of both the sea tribes and the land, are commonly rogues (of course).
  • Gnomes have a fair quantity of rogues, often known as tinkers.
  • The Guild of the Iron Rose often employs the more honest, or at least clever, rogues.

The following Roguish Archetypes are available, as noted:

  • Thief (PHB)
    • A classic!
  • Assassin (PHB)
    • Provisionally available; consult the DM.
  • Arcane Trickster
  • Inquisitive (Xanathar's)
    • Common in the merchant Houses of Luminaux.
  • Mastermind (Xanathar's)
  • Scout (Xanathar's)
  • Swashbuckler (Xanathar's)
    • The first people to fight in a lightly-armored, fencing style were fighter/rogues in Luminaux. As this style become more and more popular, it has taken on a life of its own. It is now possible to train simply as a swashbuckler from the start, maximizing the usage of light blades and light armor training.
    • Training: There are a growing number of schools, both underground and fully public, teaching the dueling arts.
    • The most well known are Felix and Jonathan's School of Swashbuckling and Derring-Do, and Darkthorne Academy of Swordsmanship, both in Luminaux.
    • Several of the Halfling clans have taken to the swashbuckler style, as well.
  • Phantom (Tasha's)
    • Either you work for or were trained by a follower of Phealas, or you are actively being hunted by them. Consult the DM for details.

Class Notes

The first people to fight in a lightly-armored, fencing style were fighter/rogues in Luminaux, who went on to develop Duelist training (and some Righteous Duelists as well). As this style become more and more popular, it has taken on a life of its own. It is now possible to train simply as a swashbuckler from the start, maximizing the usage of light blades and light armor training.

As swashbuckler from Complete Warrior with the following notes:

Training
There are a growing number of schools, both underground and fully public, teaching the dueling arts.
The most well known are Felix and Jonathan's School of Swashbuckling and Derring-Do, and Darkthorne Academy of Swordsmanship, both in Luminaux.
Several of the Halfling clans have taken to the duelist style, as well.
School Differences
Not all schools teach exactly the same style of dueling.
Alicia Darkthorne's students receive Uncanny Dodge instead of Acrobatic Charge. In place of the Dodge Bonus class feature, they receive an AC bonus exactly as a monk does, with the exception of using the character's Intelligence bonus instead of Wisdom bonus.
Felix & Jonathan teach a more flashy, swashbuckling style of swordsmanship than Alicia Darkthorne. Consequently, while they also receive an AC bonus like a monk, duelists trained by them receive their Charisma bonus to AC, not their Intelligence bonus.

Note that the Duelist and Righteous Duelist prestige classes are still available - it depends on what you want for your character as to which you take.
