Southern Highway

Stretching across the plains and desert, this highway belongs to an older age. No one knows who built it, or why, or of what type of stone it is made. Faint abjuration magic, identifiable as neither divine nor arcane, runs the length of it, and seems to keep it from being buried in sand. Recent research indicates the old spell should have failed long ago, save that the road follows a ley line for most of its length.

The Highway begins in the river city of St. Kerwyn, stretches southeast to Hotempa, at the edge of the desert, then turns east to make its way across the desert, past the Desert Beetle Inn, and into the Iron Hills. Though most maps show it simply running into the hills and then stopping, the Companions of the Rising Sun recently discovered that the city of Haven lies at the eastern end of it.

The Southern Highway functions as a trade route between Hotempa and St. Kerwyn, and also allows access to some of the specialty spices and textiles created or found by the desert nomads, for which there is modest demand in some circles of society. Though it would certainly be convenient for them, the Shepard's Trail typically avoids the highway, believing it would be too easy to get picked off by a patrol.
