Southern Highway

Stretching across the plains and desert, this highway belongs to an older age. Also known as Edvard's Folly, this highway was an attempt by the human King Edvard IX to lay claim to the whole of the Southlands. Though the road was completed, the drain on his kingdom led to his eventual dethroning and the decent of his realm into chaos.

Faint abjuration magic, identifiable as neither divine nor arcane, runs the length of it, and seems to keep it from being buried in sand. Research indicates the old spell should have failed long ago, save that the road follows a ley line for most of its length.

The Highway begins in the river city of St. Kerwyn, stretches southeast to Hotempa, at the edge of the desert, then turns east to make its way across the desert, past the Desert Beetle Inn, and into the Iron Hills.

Old maps show it simply running into the hills and then stopping, but any map produced in the last 15 years includes the City-State of Haven at the eastern end of it.

The Southern Highway functions as a trade route between Hotempa and St. Kerwyn, and also allows access to some of the specialty spices and textiles created or found by the desert nomads, for which there is modest demand in some circles of society.
